The Iran War Is Pushing Global Coal Use to Record Highs

Since the Strait of Hormuz is not available for shipment of oil, dirty coal has returned. “Five years after virtually every world leader agreed to “phase down” the burning of coal for climate reasons, the fuel is more widely used than ever”, per Brad Plumer of the NY Times. This accelerates deforestation and undermines climate negotiations. The consequences of this stalling will last longer than the war.
The US military just announced they are postponing the clean of PFAS contaminated US military sites
PFAS (perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are man-made “forever chemicals” that do not readily breakdown, meaning they stay wherever they are unless concentrated effort is applied against them. PFAS chemicals are in your body right now, and are being passed on to your offspring. The long list of detrimental effects was hidden from the public for more than the last seventy years. These chemicals spread through the land and are known to cause liver damage, cancer, reproductive harm, and other health risks.
The US military (DoD) has been a large user, especially in the form of AFFF firefighting foam. Today, it is not clear that the DoD has fully stopped using PFAS, and they are shirking their previously agreed clean up responsibilities. The Washington Sun revealed that the DoD just pushed back PFAS cleanups at nearly 243 military sites for the third time, forty with drinking water implications.
Today’s demise of climate quality is alarming. For the sake of mankind, trends must be reversed.
