Loyalty and fear has driven GOP behavior under Trump for the last decade. Therein lies their legacy. To wit: how a party was obliterated in the course of taking a wrecking ball to all things American. Still, the USA trajectory of decline is more widely derived. Democrats cling to their own fear and misdirection that is equally able to put the final fatal point on the nation’s demise.
Interesting and telling it is when AI concern forces survival-of-America dialogue. We are at a point where we cannot be any weaker and worn out, though we must stay tuned in and fight on. Stay strong, love the children, and vote for the individuals who you think are most likely to do the right things.
Chicken-shit Josh Hawley provides an important glimpse
Remember when Senator Hawley ran screaming from the violent coup effort, only to turn completely away and reinforce it as good or at least acceptable. So, Hawley facilitated the pardons of the police-beating offenders, despite his primal screaming in the moment. In this moment now, his fear of AI popped up as more threatening than his fear of Trump. Hawley took exception to Trump’s blind loyalty to the AI business titans and he called for protections. But just like the coup example, he might instantly roll over for the complete opposite big business interests. Still, it’s worth consideration, even if the Democrats, subserviant to their own demons, say nothing (except no if they are sufficiently prodded).
I do not like Josh Hawley or anything he stands for. But I think his fear of AI is genuine, as are his expressed concerns. However, just as little, I dislike the conditioned (automatic trained) response of the Democrats to summarily dismiss any GOP-origin ideas.
Credible politicians of either party should be looking for opportunities to build bridges and protect the people. The unknowns and threats posed by AI might be providing a collaboration opportunity. If we cannot break the self-defeating cycle of division now during the consideration of AI, there probably isn’t another one. Note that the politically aligned press delays and exascerbates the problem.
Consider the caution Hawley dared to speak through the Washington Post today…
“What happens when one of these hacks crashes an emergency room or shuts down people’s bank accounts? Who will pay? I am introducing legislation in Congress to make the corporations pay for the actions of their agents when they define the agents in a reckless fashion. My legislation would also make users liable when they deploy their agents in a reckless way. And it would toughen criminal penalties. The federal government already has laws on the books against hacking; it’s time to make clear those laws apply to AI companies.”
We the people sorely need positive ideas over political loyalty and fear
We should work to make something more fully true and substantial of ideas. Hawley’s panicked ideas, just like Trump’s choreographed AI accord, should not be summarily dismissed. These are cracks in the autocracy-corruption alignment. The AI titans are not fully trustworthy, for sure, some worse than others. But maybe they merit consideration because none of them say Trump won the 2020 election. Again, can we find a glimpse of hope?
